3。5 stars。 I felt like Kip's storyline fell flat and felt really forced。 That bogged the book down。However, the other storylines were awesome as usual - as well as the twists。Re-read 03-01-20:I feel the same way。 I enjoyed the first half of Kip's story a bit better, though。 However, the second half was just plain flat and boring。 3。5 stars。 I felt like Kip's storyline fell flat and felt really forced。 That bogged the book down。However, the other storylines were awesome as usual - as well as the twists。Re-read 03-01-20:I feel the same way。 I enjoyed the first half of Kip's story a bit better, though。 However, the second half was just plain flat and boring。 。。。more

Book 4: the fuse is lit, traditional power is broken, religious zealots everywhere, heroes imprisoned or cast out。。。 What a wild ride of a book。 The world is so vivid and alive it’s like getting lost in the woods when you’re young。 You might not know exactly where you are, you might be a little scared, but you’re also a little excited。 Such a fun/intense book。

I was not prepared for that ending。 I still thought I had so much more to go and then it just ended。 I guess it was a cute way to go out, with two lovers finally finding happiness together, but still was not prepared。 I only have one more left to go in the series which hopefully won't take me as long to finish as this one did, so long as it gets done before the end of the year I will be happy with it。 I was not prepared for that ending。 I still thought I had so much more to go and then it just ended。 I guess it was a cute way to go out, with two lovers finally finding happiness together, but still was not prepared。 I only have one more left to go in the series which hopefully won't take me as long to finish as this one did, so long as it gets done before the end of the year I will be happy with it。 。。。more

Wow。 This is my favorite book in the series this far!!!There was such great character growth。 The characters are all morally grey for sure but several characters got some back stories that created some serious depth。 Enough to make me rethink my opinions of them。 (view spoiler)[I feel like Kip is really growing。 He's trying to think before he speaks now and I feel like his marriage has really helped with that。 Having someone close to him that he needs to care for and consistently think about the Wow。 This is my favorite book in the series this far!!!There was such great character growth。 The characters are all morally grey for sure but several characters got some back stories that created some serious depth。 Enough to make me rethink my opinions of them。 (view spoiler)[I feel like Kip is really growing。 He's trying to think before he speaks now and I feel like his marriage has really helped with that。 Having someone close to him that he needs to care for and consistently think about their feelings。 (hide spoiler)]With that came a few twists that I definitely did not see coming! (view spoiler)[Andros is Kip's dad?!?!?! woah。 Gavin's whole storyline in this book was crazy。 The fact that he isn't a polychrome but can use black luxin blew my mind。 All of the the missing memories shown light on events in a completely different way。 I don't really like Gavin as much knowing all of it。 I can't believe his dad and brother were trying to save him with the burning knife the whole time!! They definitely aren't good people but it's nice to know there is good in them。 (hide spoiler)]My favorite thing about this book though was Kip's relationship。 Brent Weeks is known for not being great at writing women but he did something so incredibly beautiful in this book。 He talked about a problem (view spoiler)[where Tisis is not able to have sex with Kip because of some issues with the tension of her pelvic floor (hide spoiler)] that some women have and he normalized it。 The interactions around this were very realistic and made for such a sweet ending。 The thing that really got me though was the author note at the end。 He called out that the condition he wrote about was not made up but something some women really deal with。 It's not something that everyone knows about or even knows how to talk about。 He basically did a PSA to women that if you are dealing with it that there are people that can help, that they are not alone, and that it is not their fault。 I can not tell you how much that author note was appreciated and I hope that it has helped someone out there。 Even if it only helps men get more of an understanding around it that is a win! Brent Weeks’ fourth volume in the epic “Lightbringer” saga is unique amongst its other titles in that it, somewhat frustratingly, is much more tighter in structure and contained yet provides some of the biggest reveals and moments in the series。 At times, while his world building and character driven stories are paramount, Weeks can tend to waffle and that leads to a small amount of boredom。 In a way it’s like knowing about a city but getting lost in a boring ally with no cafés。 It’s huge and in Brent Weeks’ fourth volume in the epic “Lightbringer” saga is unique amongst its other titles in that it, somewhat frustratingly, is much more tighter in structure and contained yet provides some of the biggest reveals and moments in the series。 At times, while his world building and character driven stories are paramount, Weeks can tend to waffle and that leads to a small amount of boredom。 In a way it’s like knowing about a city but getting lost in a boring ally with no cafés。 It’s huge and interesting but for a small moment you find yourself a bit annoyed。 The character arcs here; Kip’s army’s momentum, Teia’s quest as a double agent for the Order of the Broken Eye and the Chromeria and Gavin’s imprisonment are what really drives the relatively smaller (in scope compared to the last three books) stories。 I’ve mentioned before that Weeks is insurmountable when it comes to world building and character development and creation。 He makes his novels pop out as if they were an epic tv series; and the same is true for “The Blood Mirror” however, again, his tendency to waffle leaves you a little exhausted。 But overall he gives a tightly executed continuation and throws in enough super exciting twists and launches new plots that make me very excited to start the fifth final volume in this grand saga。 “The Blood Mirror” doesn’t do so well standing on its own like the past novels but by gosh does it push the overarching narrative forward gloriously。 。。。more

After the excellent third book, this was such a letdown。 It was written well, and that’s why it gets two stars。 As for the story itself, there is not much redeemable about it。 We have to suffer through Gavin in a cell, which is pretty much the same storytelling that we were subjected to with Gavin in book one。 Tia progresses through her tests。 Kip’s new marriage is detailed as well as his time in the Blood Forest。 And we get a little bit about Karris dealing as a new White。 But, there was not a After the excellent third book, this was such a letdown。 It was written well, and that’s why it gets two stars。 As for the story itself, there is not much redeemable about it。 We have to suffer through Gavin in a cell, which is pretty much the same storytelling that we were subjected to with Gavin in book one。 Tia progresses through her tests。 Kip’s new marriage is detailed as well as his time in the Blood Forest。 And we get a little bit about Karris dealing as a new White。 But, there was not a lot fleshed out。 That’s the problem。 Honestly, you could have given the reader what we needed in 200 pages。 There is not a lot of substance here。 And I don’t think what we had here helped build the characters or the world that much better。 The previous book did that。 This book did not。 Very disappointing。 But, overall the story has been good, so I’m optimistic for the final book in the series。 。。。more

9。0/10This entire series is becoming so strange for me to explain。 The ideas, the magic system, the plot and some of the characters are so damn strong and I love this series because of it。 On the other hand, there are issues that are still becoming more prevalent as the series progresses and with only the last book left, I have little faith with them being fixed。 While the political side of this book was a much smaller part than it was in the third book, it is still quite heavy on the political 9。0/10This entire series is becoming so strange for me to explain。 The ideas, the magic system, the plot and some of the characters are so damn strong and I love this series because of it。 On the other hand, there are issues that are still becoming more prevalent as the series progresses and with only the last book left, I have little faith with them being fixed。 While the political side of this book was a much smaller part than it was in the third book, it is still quite heavy on the political themes。 This isn’t really a problem for me now as I do enjoy politics in my books, just not in the amount that there were in the third book。 The world building of Weeks’ novels has always been great but as we are getting closer to the conclusion of this series, Weeks is starting to take a different approach in some aspects of the world building。 A good amount of the information that we were given about the world in previous books is now being changed under the guise of “this information has been hidden and only certain, special people know if it”。 This makes this interesting again and obviously opens plenty of doors for Weeks to explore in the final books。 However, it feels a little cheap and it seems to be treading the line for me of in between disliking this move as it cheapens the first couple of books or understanding this change and embracing what this can do for the story and plot。 These are the types of issues that I have such mixed feelings about。 Similarly, the character work was quite spotty in this book。 Some characters like Gavin, Teia, Andross, and Karris were written well and are still greatly interesting characters who are still growing and changing as the story goes on。 Kip though, after such a redemption in character writing in the third book, went back to being just as frustrating as the first two books。 He is more than capable now but the sheer AMOUNT of character growth he went through in such a short amount of time just made me start to dislike him again。 I think this was quite a bad move on Weeks’ part as he had such little character growth for Kip in his first three books and then realized here that he needed Kip to become who he was supposed to be at this point。 The problem is that, in my opinion, this should have been a slower more even process through the first four books, and this was definitely not the case。 Kip went from a fat, whiney, inexperienced boy (albeit much less so than the first two books) who should not be leading a war effort at the end of book three, to the badass commander and leader halfway through the fourth book。 While there are still issues with this series (some which irk me more than others) “The Blood Mirror” is still a damn fine addition to the series and I hope that the last book gives us a satisfying ending。 。。。more
